Biography/insight
Tim Steven's art is essentially a series of trail markings of a life lived — a personal experience within a universal language. Sometimes extremely bold, simplified and direct, and other times intimately nuanced observations and thought.
Steven is an Ontario-based artist currently living in Cambridge, just west of Toronto. He studied at Sheridan College of Applied Arts, operated his award winning design studio for 25 years, while also exhibiting his paintings. He closed his design practice in 2005 to focus on his art -- oil and acrylic painting.
Instinct, observation and exploration of ideas and materials combine in over 40 years of making art. This led him through eight years of fascination with the image of the butterfly, breaking away from his illustrator‘s approach to painting, to following the paint.
Today, landscape and figurative influences never far away, abstraction has become an ever-increasing interest in his painting.
My vision is to create images through an ebb and flow of spontaneous and controlled mark-making, exploring the relationship between intention and chance. The interplay of opposites - bold textured applications of paint intersect with intimate nuance toward a final resolution.
